Nationwide Review

Comprehensive pet health coverage from insurance experts. Available wellness plan add-ons for routine care. Vet helpline for 24/7 animal medical advice.

Nationwide is a Fortune 100 company and a top insurance provider in America that first introduced pet insurance in 1982. Nationwide Pet Insurance (formerly VPI) is underwritten by National Casualty Company and has been helping people keep their pets happier and healthier for decades. With healthcare coverage for dogs, cats, avians, and exotics, Nationwide has a pet insurance plan to suit the needs of any pet parent.

With some of the most comprehensive pet insurance plans available on the market today, optional wellness plans for routine veterinary care, and 24-hour access to advice from licensed veterinarians for every policyholder, it’s no wonder that Nationwide Pet Insurance is the top choice of pet owners and professionals from around the country.

Coverage Details

Our Nationwide Pet Insurance review is going to show you some of their best coverage benefits. We’ve gathered up all the info on what’s covered by Nationwide Pet Insurance for you, so you don’t have to waste your own time when trying to choose the right coverage for your pet.

Accidents and Illnesses: If your pet is injured in an accident or becomes ill while covered by Nationwide Pet Insurance, they’ll reimburse you for 90% of your total vet bill.

Emergency Care and Surgery: All animal emergency care and any necessary surgical procedures will also be reimbursed by Nationwide, giving you the peace of mind that comes with top-notch pet insurance.

Exam Fees and Prescription Meds: With one of Nationwide’s Pet Wellness plans, you’ll be reimbursed for 90% of your pet’s exam fees and any necessary prescription medication, which typically aren’t covered by other providers.

Cancer and Chronic Conditions: Nationwide understands how devastating it can be when a pet is diagnosed with cancer or another chronic condition, which is why they reimburse you for all treatments for cancer or other long-lasting medical conditions.

Routine Pet Care: If you sign your pet up for one of Nationwide’s Pet Wellness plans, you’ll be reimbursed for your pet’s vaccinations, checkups and regular blood screenings, and other crucial routine veterinary care.

Like all pet insurance providers, Nationwide does have some exclusions you should know about. What’s not covered by Nationwide Pet Insurance includes pre-existing conditions, hereditary disorders, congenital anomalies, grooming, and other elective procedures.

Plan Rates & Sample Quotes

Nationwide Pet Insurance provides some of the most comprehensive coverage that we’ve found amongst the top pet insurance providers. But they also have some of the highest monthly premiums, as well, which means you should do your best to balance your pet’s coverage choices if you’re looking to save money each month.

Pet insurance coverage from Nationwide starts at around $30 for dogs and $18 for cats with their most basic plan. If you’re already a Nationwide Insurance member or your employer offers it as a benefit, you can save a lot more on your pet’s health insurance coverage.

Nationwide makes it super-easy to get a free online pet insurance quote. But in case you want to get a good overview of what you can expect to pay each month with Nationwide Pet Insurance, we’ve gathered up some sample policy quotes for you.

Domestic Shorthair Cat: 1 year old, Male, Florida (32818) covered for $27.81 per month.

Golden Retriever: 3 years old, Female, Illinois (60007) covered for $75.92 per month.

French Bulldog: 6 years old, Male, California (94102) covered for $136.86 per month.

German Shepherd: 2 years old, Female, New York (10003) covered for $80.09 per month.

Please Note: All sample policy quotes come with a 90% reimbursement rate, a $250 annual deductible, and a $10,000 yearly benefit limit.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

With top-tier coverage from Nationwide with their Whole Pet plans, you’ll be automatically reimbursed for 90% of the actual cost of your pet’s medical bills. But with their Major Medical or Pet Wellness plans, you’ll be reimbursed for 90% of costs according to a benefits schedule.

This means payouts are capped by services or conditions, so if you’re going with the Nationwide Whole Medical or Pet Wellness plans, we recommend that you take a good look at the policy quote before your purchase, in order to make sure that your pet isn’t susceptible to any of the listed conditions.

Reimbursement Structure: Actual Cost or Benefits Schedule

Minimum Reimbursement: 90%

Maximum Reimbursement: 90%

Unlike many other pet insurance companies, Nationwide only offers two annual deductible options, which might seem a bit restricting at first. But this also keeps your pet insurance policy much easier to decipher when you’re already stressed by a pet injury or illness.

Deductible Type: Annual

Minimum Deductible: $100

Maximum Deductible: $250

If you’re looking for top-notch health insurance coverage for your pet from one of the biggest names in the industry, you really can’t go wrong with choosing Nationwide Pet Insurance, even though they don’t give you quite as many customizable policy options.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Maybe you’re asking yourself, “Should I enroll my pet in Nationwide Pet Insurance?” When shopping for the best insurance for your needs, you need to keep enrollment ages and any waiting periods at the front of your mind.

Nationwide is similar to other pet insurance providers in the fact that they begin enrolling puppies and kittens at 6-weeks-old. But unlike other pet insurance companies, Nationwide puts a relatively low restriction in place for enrolling older pets. You have to sign your dog or cat up before 10 years of age to qualify for Nationwide Pet Insurance.

Minimum Enrollment Age: 6 weeks

Maximum Enrollment Age: 10 years

Illness & Injury Waiting Period: 14 days

Pet Wellness Waiting Period: 24 hours

Cruciate Ligament Waiting Period: 12 months

With such great coverage, industry-standard waiting periods, and the protection that comes with knowing your pet will never be dropped once enrolled, no matter their age or healthcare needs, we couldn’t help but give Nationwide Pet Insurance two thumbs up.

Claims & Customer Support

If you have a question or concern about your pet insurance policy, you can reach Nationwide by phone or email Monday through Saturday during regular PST business hours. You’ll be able to quickly speak with a pet insurance expert or you can view Nationwide’s in-depth FAQs section on your schedule.

Filing a claim with Nationwide Pet Insurance is also quick and easy, thanks to being able to download a form, have your vet fill it out, and then fax, email, or submit it via the Nationwide mobile app for iPhone or Android.

You can also get your most important pet healthcare questions answered by speaking with a licensed veterinarian on the 24/7 Nationwide Pet Helpline. You’ll be able to ask a vet about pet emergencies, behavioral issues, or any other questions you might have, and it’s all included in your Nationwide Pet Insurance policy.

Pet Owner Opinions

As a part of our review of Nationwide Pet Insurance, we wanted to see what actual pet owners had to say. We turned to Yelp to get some real info from Nationwide Pet customer reviews. Here’s what they had to say…

We had Nationwide Pet Insurance for our English Bulldog, Hines, for 12 1/2 years before he passed away.  We always joked that they should have canceled our policy for all of the claims we submitted. However, they never did and the slight premium increases were due to the age of our dog.  My understanding is that they never increase premiums based on claims submitted. Fast forward to today and I just submitted a quote request for our new rescue English bulldog, Doug. The premium for a comprehensive plan was surprisingly reasonable considering we don’t know the history of Doug.  I highly recommend them to anyone with a pet. It’s peace of mind when you need it most. Melissa L, Yelp 10/16/18

We initially bought Nationwide pet insurance for our 6 month Doberman puppy because it was the best deal around and we knew if something was to happen, it would be expensive. All other companies were charging 3 times more because he is purebred. Unfortunately, around his 1st birthday, he was diagnosed with renal dysplasia, kidney failure stage 4. We were really heartbroken and thank goodness for this insurance, we didn’t have to stress about the cost of his treatment. We were at peace knowing we tried everything we could. His vet bills came up to 5K within a month. Thank you Nationwide. You relieve so much stress in difficult situations. Flore G, Yelp 10/23/18

I did a lot of research before finally picking an insurance provider for our chocolate lab, Lily. I wanted a policy that was easy to understand and easy to submit a claim with. Every time we go to the vet I fill out a simple form and send over the invoice the vet gives me, that’s it. Within 30 days you get an email with what went towards your deductible/ being reimbursed. I highly recommend Nationwide if you’re looking for pet insurance. They’re very easy to work with. Ashley R, Yelp 11/18/18

The Good

As with all of our editor reviews, we put Nationwide through its paces, so you don’t have to waste your time or money while looking for the best insurance coverage for your pet. The following are some of our favorite Nationwide Pet Insurance benefits…

Coverage for All Pets

Unlike every other pet insurance provider, Nationwide believes that every pet deserves to have access to medical care, and every pet parent should have the good feeling that comes with knowing they can afford life-saving vet care. That’s why Nationwide Pet Insurance offers coverage for cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, ferrets, and every other type of pet.

Choose Your Veterinarian

You can use Nationwide Pet Insurance anywhere in the world, whether your regular vet is down the street, or you’re traveling overseas with your pet. This is an awesome perk of being covered by Nationwide since most pet insurance companies only provide coverage in the United States.

User-Friendly Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers only offer you access to your pet’s policy over the phone or only accept the submission of claims by fax or snail mail. But Nationwide Pet Insurance gives you super-simple claims filing, award-winning customer care, and 24/7 account access both online and via an intuitive mobile app.

Total Peace of Mind

With some of the best coverage we’ve encountered yet, Nationwide Pet Insurance gives you the confidence that comes with knowing your pet will get the medical care they need to stay with you as long as possible. You don’t have to worry about accidents or illnesses befalling your pet with Nationwide Pet Insurance, and coverage starts at as little as $1 a day.

The Bad

While we were concerned to learn during our Nationwide Pet Insurance review that the company has annual per-condition limits on its Major Medical plan, they also offer much more comprehensive and less limited coverage with their other available pet insurance plans.

We also found that Nationwide Pet Wellness plans aren’t available in every state, but the company is doing everything they can to work with veterinary hospitals from around the United States to make sure that coverage is increased to include every pet parent in America.

The Bottom Line

Although there are some coverage limits with Nationwide’s more cost-effective plans, they offer so many great benefits for pet owners, including access to licensed veterinarians via their pet helpline, we couldn’t help but be impressed with their top-tier pet insurance plans.

If you want to protect your dog or cat with pet health coverage from one of the nation’s leading insurance companies, you can’t go wrong with choosing Nationwide Pet Insurance. You’ll also get some awesome discounts through employee benefit offers and other exclusive partnerships.
