Despite its similarities from its names, home security and home automation are two very different things. If you’re considering purchasing any of the two, you’ll likely hear the two names.
Before making the big purchase, make sure you know what you’re investing in. Knowing what you’re getting, allows you to save money and time.
Here’s the difference between home automation and home security.
Home Security
This refers to a lot of different things. It’s basically what keeps your home protected and secured. Secured from intruders, burglars and other unwanted guests.
Home security is usually referenced to things such as door locks, window locks and all the other locks in the house.
It is also used in reference for security systems that monitor doors, windows, CCTV cameras, motion sensors, motion-sensing lights, alarm systems, safes and literally anything that keeps your possessions and home secured.
Home Automation
Home automation is basically the full automation of all the technologically inclined materials inside your home. It includes devices like smoke detectors, carbon monoxide sensors, security locks and controls, thermostat, lights, and security systems.
This includes controlling your appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, TV, and home entertainment system. It can also include other things such as garage doors, blinds, curtains, automatic pet feeders, intercoms and a lot more things in your home.
Home automation technology is usually controlled from a remote device such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. It can also be controlled by a pre-programmed system from a control panel on your wall.
So Home Automation can and should include home security. But keep in mind that it is not necessary to include everything in your house in the automation.
The Costs
While it’s true we should put safety first and the cost second, there are times where we have to make sure the price doesn’t break the bank. This is especially so after buying a new home.
Investing in a state-of-the-art system is something you’re going to use for the next decade or so. Naturally, you’d want something that would fit the budget and purpose.
Usually, security companies fine you for the equipment and the installation charge, along with the monthly subscription fee. The cheapest rate you could find would cost about $600, and then you’ll have to pay a monthly fee of $15.
It may be a hefty investment, but there are companies that waive off the front-up fees for the security packages if you decide to sign a one-year agreement with them.
Additional Services
Purchasing complete home security and automation package will require you to pay more than investing in home security alone.
The cost greatly varies from one company to another, if you’re planning to add all the bells and whistles, then it may cost an arm or leg.
This usually includes appliance controls and lightings. Of course, if you want to add more of these services, it’s all up to you. Instead of paying a measly $15/month, it’ll range from $49.99-$69.99.
